Abstract:

This article describes the process by which the critical care unit at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center (PHCMC) in Mission Hills, California, implemented a family-centered care program. Begun in 2000 as a pilot program in a 24-bed combined ICU, CCU, ED, and telemetry unit, family-centered care became the model of patient care in all nursing units (medical–surgical, maternal– child) and all departments (respiratory, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and admitting) by 2001.
